Canada Post says it needs to crack down on junk mail in order to save the environment and - its bottom line. After issuing its first annual corporate responsibility report yesterday, the Crown corp launched a new campaign to encourage more sustainable mailing practices for businesses and consumers.

Only today we dumped out several flyers – putting them directly into the recycling box. That seems a good thing to do, until you consider how much energy goes into the production and distribution of the brightly coloured, glossy mail, and the energy it takes to recycle. Quite a few Canadians feel this way, in fact, according to the Red Dot website, nearly 70% of us are not interested in mail of this type, and a quarter of us toss it without even a second glance.

Kalpna Solanki is a mother whose public health and environmental background led her to evaluate all baby food products on the market while her baby was still breastfeeding. Her findings revealed that baby food didn’t seem very creative and was not of the calibre that she wanted for her child. She was uncompromising when it came to the quality of her baby’s nutrition, so when it was time to introduce solid foods, she made everything from scratch using the best quality organic ingredients.
