Urban agriculture in Vancouver

February 1, 2008

This is one of the first of many posts on urban agriculture in Vancouver and BC, and to kick off such an important component of our cities, we thought a picture (or in this case a video stream) is worth a thousand words.

Turn up your speakers, sit back and enjoy this time lapse movie taken from a daily webcam of the City Farmer Demonstration Garden in Vancouver, BC between November 2006 and October 2007.

I was thinking of proposing a community garden in my neighbourhood. Not because people don’t have their own gardens, but as a beautification of the neighbourhood and to grow fruits, veggies, herbs and other plants, and to compost. It’s a low-density residential neighourhood with a few empty lots that sooner or later will be developed in some way. I’d rather see a garden that gets people together and allows us to, as a collective, grow and share food. I don’t know if it would work out here but it was a thought…

Got something to say?
