Ocean wise Vancouver

January 9, 2008

Ocean Wise seafood choices program is a Vancouver Aquarium conservation initiative begun in 2005 in with local restaurants and other conservation partners. It was created to help restaurants and their customers make sustainable seafood choices.

Knowing the difference between non-sustainable and sustainable seafood can be a challenge for diners and restaurants alike. Ocean Wise allows diners to confidently identify restaurants that provide environmentally responsible seafood menu items, and also provides restaurants with the educational information and support to continuously improve menus from an environmental sustainability perspective.

Environmental issues concerning seafood are many and varied, but broadly include: overfishing - harvesting too many fish and not leaving enough for them to re-populate; bycatch - removing animals from the ocean not intended as part of the catch; and, habitat degradation - harvesting practices that negatively impact ocean habitat.

Look for the Ocean Wise symbol on menus at participating restaurants – it is your assurance that a seafood dish has been guaranteed ocean-friendly by the Vancouver Aquarium. Participation is open to any British Columbia restaurant or food service business that regularly serves seafood dishes.

ou can enjoy a great meal while doing your part to protect our oceans! For more information on this program, a list of participating restaurants and to see the Ocean Wise symbol, click here.
