Grain gains

December 16, 2007

Think you know the definition of navicular? fey? reprehend? How about famine? According to the United Nations, one person dies every 3.5 seconds of hunger or hunger-related causes somewhere in the world. Wish there was a straightforward way to help? Check out FreeRice.com and help provide rice to hungry people in need in exchange for brushing up on your vocabulary.

It’s such a cool idea - basically you are learning vocabulary and giving free rice. It’s simple: test your word knowledge, and for every definition you get right, FreeRice will donate 20 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program (WFP). So, five correct words generates 100 grains of rice.

How does it work? When you play the multiple-choice game, ads appear at the bottom of the screen. The money generated from these ads is then used to buy rice. The rice is distributed by the WFP, who works with over 1,000 organizations in more than 75 countries. Wherever possible, the WFP buys locally to support local farmers and economies.

The site is easy and fun. It may not be specifically Vancouver related, but we hope you’ll visit FreeRice daily for an enjoyable and worthwhile way to help those less fortunate – you’ll feel quite beneficent!
