Earth hour 2008

December 14, 2007

On March 31, 2007, 2.2 million people and over two thousand Sydney businesses turned off their lights - and called it Earth Hour. This massive collective effort reduced Sydney’s energy consumption by 10.2% for that one hour, which is the equivalent effect of taking 48,000 cars off the road for the same amount of time. With international Sydney landmarks such as the Harbour Bridge and Opera House in the dark, the world took notice.

Inspired by the collective effort of Sydney, many major cities from Tel Aviv to Toronto are joining Earth Hour on March 29, 2008, turning a symbolic event into a global movement. This global initiative was officially announced today at the United Nations Climate Change conference in Bali. Indonesia.

Led by the World Wildlife Fund, cities and communities will turn out their lights during Earth Hour to symbolise their leadership and commitment to finding solutions for climate change.

Cities from across Europe, North America, Asia and Asia Pacific were named as the flagship participants, with more cities expected to join in the days ahead. These cities are playing a leadership role in supporting this unique global event and demonstrating their commitment to fighting climate change.
